introduction

Juancarlo Añez is a computing engineer specialized in providing software solutions to business, scientific, and engineering problems. During his extensive professional career, he has designed and developed many complete software systems for different computing platforms and using several different programming languages.

Juancarlo has successfully worked with multidisciplinary teams in many projects. In recent years, he has consulted for Fortune 500 companies in enterprise architecture, and with large software development companies in process, methodology, and software planning and control. More recently, Juancarlo came back to software design and architecture, with special interest in hybrid and portable applications.

Juancarlo is the creator of the successful open-source projects DUnit, WANT, and JRCS, and is a committer to the Apache Software Foundation's Jakarta Commons.

He received a degree in Computing Engineering from the prestigious Simón Bolívar University, Caracas, Venezuela, in 1995.

He is bilingual Spanish-English (as a child he attended school in Brighton, England), and has working knowledge of Italian and French.

career in brief

Juancarlo started programming as a hobby in 1979, and moved onto professional software development in 1985, when he funded Modelistica. During his professional carreer, Juancarlo has been consultant, designer, and developer of software systems for important organizations in the private and public sectors.

On the first half of 2012 Juancarlo built a hybrid application in Python for Windows to gather business plan information from entrepreneurs for BidX b.v, The Neatherlands.

From 2005 to 2010 he was a consultant with Sync Consultores. on the development of SyncNMS, a suite of computer network monitoring tolls built upon the open source OpenNMS.

In partnership with DBAccess from 2003 to 2006, he a was consultant on several projects for CNA, a US-based global insurance company. He collaborated in the development of a tool for verification of web application validity and compliance with company standard, wrote an assessment about application migration to a different Model-View-Controller (MVC) technology, and was involved as a consultant in several infrastructure, business-critical, and application projects involving J2EE and .Net technologies. He later consulted for Safeco Insurance while helping them modernize their enterprise architecture.

He was IT consultant for the Venezuelan Minister of Planning and Development, under the supervision of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). He was in charge of the initial design of the processes involved in the 2003 Venezuelan foreign currency exchange control.

Juancarlo was professor in charge of the Translators and Interpreters subject at the UCAB University in Venezuela.

He worked as correspondent on the topics around open-source software during the launch of the Borland Developer News online publication. He was also a writer and later a corresponding editor for the prestigious Windows Tech Journal magazine, and software reviewer for Java Report.

Between 1994 and 1995, he was a visiting scholar at the University of California in Davis (UCDAVIS).

From 1987 to 2011 Juancarlo was a consultant for the Schools of Arquitecture and of Law of the Central University of Venezuela. He designed and developed the systems used for student admission exams in those schools.

As founder, share-holder, and CTO of Modelistica, Juancarlo has been one of the main contrubutors to the well recognized TRANUS transportation and land use simulation, planning, ane evaluation system, and is currently its maintainer.

Since 1994 Juancarlo became a regular writer for the prestigious Windows Tech Journal magazine, wrote dozens of articles for it, and became one of its Contributing Editors in 1997. He was a weekly correspondent on open-source software for the Borland Developer News online publication during its launch in 1999 (copies of the articles are available online). He also wrote technical articles, editorials, and reviews for publications such as Visual Basic Developers Journal, and Java Report. Juancarlo was a technical editor for the third and fourth editions of the "Mastering Delphi" series of books by Marco Cantú.
